New superintendent, Richard Carranza, decided to shake things up when he was hired by singing along with a live Mariachi band on his first day. Just before he took the stage, Carranza listened to his peers of the Houston Independent School District as they sung his work praises. Afterward, he broke into song himself. Twenty years ago Carranza started a Mariachi club at a school where he worked as a way to integrate Mexican culture into education.
